There is an urgent need to migrate to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) given that the IPv4 address users are accustomed to will be practically used up soon.

Deputy Information Communication and Culture, Minister Joseph Salang Gandum, said the government realised this several years ago and in 2005, set up the National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAV6), which is located in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to spearhead the preparatory process.

“NAV6 had to date managed to assist government agencies to migrate IPv6, and was currently providing expertise to others, including USM’s own IPv6 task force to help in the migration.

“I was informed that todate, NAV6 has managed to train and certified engineers from countries like Sudan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India and Australia,” he said at the signing of a memorandum of agreement between IPv6 Global Sdn Bhd and USAINS Holding Sdn Bhd yesterday.

The pact between IPv6 Global, a web services company specialising in the IPv6 transition area, and USAINS (a wholly-owned unit of USM), aims to enhance migration efforts towards IPv6.

IPv6 Global was represented by its chairman Sidek Ahmad and USAINS by managing director Dr Gan Ee Kiang.
