Kampung Duyong, home of the legendary warrior Hang Tuah, will receive a boost to the tune of RM132 million in the form of a heritage tourism project.
Melaka Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said the village was believed to be where Hang Tuah resided, and was also mentioned in old tales like the Legends of Sungai Duyong.
“The project will be built on a 40-hectare site combining cultural identity, architecture and tradition. It is expected to be completed in March 2003,” he said after performing the ground-breaking ceremony at the site yesterday.
He said the state government believed the village should be redeveloped as a historical conservation site through the living museum concept.
The village currently receives about 2,000 visitors a month.
