A parliamentarian yesterday proposed for action be taken against parents who still refuse to put their children in school with the excuse they cannot afford their schooling.
Debating on the Supply Bill 2012 in the Dewan Rakyat here, Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) said parents could no longer use this excuse as the government had abolished school fees for primary and secondary students
beginning with the next school session.
Prime Ministe Najib Abdul Razak, when tabling the 2012 Budget on Oct 7, had said that school fees in government schools would be abolished to provide free education for children in the country, regardless of their
socio-economic background.
Liang also hoped that teachers would perform their duties well because under the 2012 Budget, they would be getting incentives like not having to wait for 20 years for promotion as they could reach DG 44 in their eighth year and DG 48 in their 16th year of service.
“We don’t want to have irresponsible teachers who go missing from class, always taking sick leave, who sleep during working hours or who touch on students’ personal matters like religion,” he said.
