The prices of chicken in Sarawak fetching between RM9.50 and RM11.50 per kg due to shortage of supply are expected to return to normal at between RM7.50 and RM8 per kg from mid-November.
Sarawak Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman said the price hike since last month varied according to locations with chicken in Kuching sold at RM9.50 per kg while in remote areas like Kapit, RM11.50 per kg.
“The supply is expected to return to normal within 42 or 45 days as the shortage of supply at the moment is due to high demand after the festive season,” he said.
He said “Ops Gaji” had been launched to avoid unscrupulous traders from raising chicken prices indiscriminately and so far 21 notices had been issued, including against seven poultry farms in Sarawak under the Anti-Profiteering Act 2010.
“They were given show-cause letters and if their explanations are unsatisfactory, action will be taken against them,” he added.
