The government is weighing an option to ease the burden of the Cheras-Kajang highway users in light of an increase in the toll in 2013 as per the concession agreement.
“The Works Ministry and the Finance Ministry as well as the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) in the Prime Minister’s Department are currently deliberating on the proposals and implications before the option is submitted
for consideration and approval by the cabinet,” Works Minister Datuk Seri Shaziman Abu Mansor said yesterday.
He said this in a written reply to Tan Kok Wai (DAP-Cheras) who had asked on the initiative by the government to help ease the burden of users of the highway which is managed by the concessionaire, Grand Saga Sdn Bhd.
On the toll collection derived from the highway, he said that since operations started in 1995 up to Dec 31, 2010, the total was RM585.5 million, which was lower compared to the projected collection of RM613.4 million in the concession agreement.
“The total traffic flow in the same period was 809.7 million vehicles compared to the projected 822.8 million,” he said.
He said the total cost of maintenance and operations in that period was RM147.3 million.
“The concession period will expire in 2030,” he said.
