A beggar threw her six-month-old baby boy into the sea to avoid being detained by the enforcement officers during an anti-vagrancy operation in Tawau yesterday.
Tawau Welfare Department assistant director Asnah Kassim who headed the two-hour operation, said, however, the baby was rescued by the officers.
“Three other little children of beggars managed to escape being detained,” she told reporters after the operation.
Asnah also said that the operation was carried out to provide assistance to the beggars and at the same time, to act on complaints received from public against the beggars.
