Nine people died on the last day yesterday of the Ops Sikap-24 exercise to reduce fatal road accidents in the Aidilfitri festive season, raising to 289 the total number of people killed during the period from Aug 23.

The Royal Malaysia Police website today reported that motorcyclists made up four of the nine dead yesterday, two were motorists, one was a lorry driver, one was a cyclist and one another type of vehicle user.

It also reported that three of the deaths took place on state roads, two on highways, two on federal roads and one each on municipal and other roads.

The highest number of accidents yesterday was recorded on municipal roads, at 503, followed by 275 on federal roads, 212 on state roads, 115 on highways and 81 on other roads, bringing the total number of accidents to 1,186.

The website also reported that 9,253 summonses were issued for various traffic offences yesterday.
