Two Nigerian men and a Malaysian woman were charged in the Sessions Court here today with cheating a teacher of RM146,600 by making her believe that a black paper could change into American currency (USD)with the use of a type of chemical.
Obi Uzoma, 28, Nwabudike Emmanual Chukwuma, 28, and Azlinda Hussain, 38, are jointly charged with two others, who are still at large, with committing the offence at the Public Bank branch in Masjid Tanah and the Masjid Tanah CIMB Bank here last July 29.
They are charged with cheating Mashitoh Hassan, 36, by offering her the black paper which they claimed could change into USD using a type of chemical, which to an extent had resulted in Mashitoh believing them and prompting her to bank in RM53,600 into a CIMB Bank and another RM93,000 into a Public Bank account belonging to Azlinda for the purchase of the chemical substance.
They are charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and whipping and is also liable to fine, if found guilty.
All of them, who were unrepresented, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.
The Nigerians had entered the country using a student pass three years ago, while Azlinda, from Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, is a cleark at a tyre shop.
Judge Zaharah Hussain allowed Azlinda bail of RM20,000 in two sureties and ordered her to report to the nearest police station every month.
However, the two Nigerians were denied bail following an application by deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat, who feared that they might fled the country.
Zaharah set Oct 6 for mention.
