The Chinese non-profit Higher Institution Southern College have raised RM 100,000 in funds for the Traditional Medicine Building, with the assistance of over 70 Chinese associations from the Zhong Yuan (Hungry Ghost) Festival.
According to Tan Liang Soong, Chairman for the Fund Raising Project, the fund served as the building fund for the Traditional Medicine Faculty, which is still short of RM500,000 to bring the 5-storey academy building to completion as the courses at the faculty are to commence soon.
The new Chinese Traditional Medicine Faculty is a new twinning program between the Southern College and the Tian Jin Medical University in China, which is approved by MQA ( Malaysia Qualification Accreditation ) of Ministry of Higher Education to conduct the 3 +2 program in Malaysia.
Tan thanks all the supporting associations, mainly the temple and community associations for supporting the Southern College since 1999.
Each year through the Zhong Yuan ( Hungry Ghost ) Festival, the chinese community raises education and charity funds for the underprivileged and students who need scholarships to further their studies. Some educational funds are raise to build schools or upgrade existing facilities of chinese primary and Independent Secondary Schools.
This year through the auctioning of Calligraphy and Pewter Souvenirs, RM 100,00 was raised, but the college hopes that more money can be raised to help ease the financial burden.
