PJ Security Team to assist in safe-neighborhood program

The plan for the Pasukan Keselamatan Kejiranan Petaling Jaya (PKKPJ) or Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Security Team to assist Petaling Jaya city council and the police in ensuring safe neighbourhoods in the city was finally implemented successfully with its official launch by Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim at banquet hall, MBPJ Civic Hall on Thursday 28th July 2011.

During the launch of the volunteers security programme, each of the more than 20 resident associations, Rukun Tetangga, JKKK and other  community groups who had earlier registered with the council as their area’s neighbourhood security team received an incentive of RM5,000 allocation from the council.

The city of Petaling Jaya is the first of 149 local authorities to implement this program. The implementation added a new dimension to the efforts to give the residents a higher level of security besides promoting neighbourliness among the residents.

In line with the city council’s mission to be a sustainable, dynamic and a leading city, the program is an effective step to foster the spirit of an active, safe and harmonious neighbourhood among the residents of Petaling Jaya together with other agencies including the police and the National Integration and Unity Department.

Petaling Jaya city mayor Dato’ Haji Mohamad Roslan bin Sakiman said: “The establishment of the Petaling Jaya neighbourhood security team is one of the council’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to create a safe neighbourhood by involving resident associations and rukun tetangga in security programs to be more sensitive to security concerns without putting the burden solely on the local authorities.“

“The council had allocated RM1 million to be contributed to those involved in setting up the neighbourhood security team and active in carrying out security programs in the 24 designated zones administered by the council.”

“We hope that with the incentive given, the resident associations and rukun tetangga will be more active in carrying out activities that involved the community joining forces in monitoring security in the neighbourhood. This is expected to help to reduce crime and to increase and enhance effective community participation by every resident.“

The city mayor urged those who had yet to register with the council as their area’s neighbourhood security team to do so to be eligible for the allocation of RM5,000.

There are 24 designated zones in Petaling Jaya currently involving 173 resident associations, Rukun Tetangga, JKKK and other community groups served by 24 MBPJ councillors.

Under the zoning system, each of the 24 councillors is allocated a speciifed area to better serve the local residents.

“The initiative by MBPJ to launch the program is a right step that should be set as an example for other local authorities,” said Selangor Mentri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
