We had received complaints on the chicken and duck catching competition held at the Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya Fishing Carnival 2011 on 3rd July. Women scrambled to catch the chickens, and men waded into the Taman Tasik Puchong Perdana lake to catch the ducks.

SPCA Selangor wrote a letter of protest to Asmawi Bin Kasbi (Yang Di Pertua, Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya) with the title “Snagging of Fowls is in Direct Contravention of the Animal Act”. We requested that future activities do not involve the use of fish, fowls or other animals in a manner that causes them pain, distress and fear.

We expressed our concern that such activities in these very public events will instill in the parties involved that it is acceptable to cause distress to other living creatures in sporting and recreational programs.

Furthermore, in the eyes of the world at large, Malaysians will be viewed as lagging in our practice of good animal husbandry and general animal handling.

We hope that this will also be a reminder to other event organisers and TV producers to leave  helpless animals out of their event activities and TV game shows.
