Malaysia will have its very first electric vehicle (EV) sharing programme for the public which is based on the pay-as-you-use concept this coming August.
Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), CMS Consortium Sdn Bhd (Comos) and Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) are joint ventures of the programme.
Comos executive chairman Datuk Seri Syed Zaina Abidin Syed Mohamed Thair said before one can rent the cars a membership is required- either the Nissan Leaf or the Renault Zoe.
“Memberships will be accepted in July,” he said during the soft launch here yesterday by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
“The rental rate is to be finalised and for the time being it will be affordable,” he added.
Nevertheless, Syed Zainal Abidin said the rate will not be cheaper than taxi fares for the same travel time and distance.
“Members will only need to book using their smartphone when renting the cars, a unique code will be given to them and they will be directed to the station with available cars.
“Upon obtaining the cars, the code will be keyed in to unlock and drive the car. When finished, the car can be parked at any EV parking bay which is related to the programme,” he said, in addition that charges are based on the time.
Syed Zainal Abidin said the programme starts in the Klang Valley with roughly 40 cars, followed by Langkawi, Malacca, Johor Baru and Penang.
He revealed that places such as LRT stations, shopping malls and prominent government buildings were the places of the vehicle pick-up and drop-off points.
