About 100 residents of Block 5, Kampung Titingan, were left homeless when a fire razed their squatter houses late last night.
No one was injured in the incident, Tawau Fire and Rescue deputy superintendent Julius John Stephen said to reporters at the scene.
Julius said 18 firemen rushed to the site in two trucks after getting a callat 11.41 pm but 80% of the houses were already destroyed by then.
The firemen were hampered by narrow, winding lanes and low water pressure, but managed to bring the blaze under control in 30 minutes with the help of theresidents and the police, he said.
The cause of the fire and estimated damage were being investigated, headded.
Kampung Titingan is probably the most congested squatter area in Tawau, and last night’s fire was the fifth to break out in that area this year.
