The Perak Fisheries Department detained 87 Thai fishermen and seized five trawler boats after they were caught fishing off the coast of Pantai Remis on Tuesday.

LUMUT – The Perak Fisheries Department detained 87 Thai fishermen and seized five trawler boats after they were caught fishing off the coast of Pantai Remis on Tuesday.

The department’s head of resources protection unit, Inwi Eh Kliyau, said the boats, based in Hutan Melintang, Bagan Datoh, were detained near Pulau Sembilan, not far from Pantai Remis. He said boats under the C2 zone category were only allowed to carry out fishing activity in areas beyond 30 nautical miles from the shore. The first boat was detained at about 7.30am, followed by four others an hour later, Inwi told Bernama here yesterday.

He said all the fishermen, aged between 19 and 76, were taken to the department’s base in Kampung Acheh to facilitate investigations.
