Jaro promotes craftsmanship of the disabled community

Johor Bahru – The funds raised from the sale of the heritage products made by the members of disabled community would go towards paying Jaro staff salaries and the employment of more workers. [VIDEO]

A bazaar to showcase the skills and craftsmanship of the disabled community was organised by Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (Jaro) recently in Johor Bahru.

The bazaar, which was part of the ongoing Visit Malaysia Year 2014 was graced with the presence of guest-of-honour, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah.

The funds raised from the event would go towards paying Jaro staff salaries and the employment of more workers.

According to volunteer B.H. Khoo, the whole event is focussed on promoting products by Jaro and as other people, which contributes up to 40% from the sale of their products.

“This is also an awareness program and to generate some income for Jaro,” said Khoo.

Jaro was originally known as Johor Anti-TB Rehabilitation Organisation, founded by Dr Beryl Wilberforce-Smith in 1952 as a rehabilitation centre in Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru.

As the number TB cases dwindled, Jaro departed from their original mission and has been helping disabled persons in rehabilitation and skills training and also manage workshops through their centre.

JARO is located at Jalan Sungai Chat,  Johor Bahru.  For details, call 07–224 5632.
