Vice President of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia and current President of KL Wushu Federation Master Ling Eng Chan said Wushu can be essential in promoting and creating awareness of the importance of healthy living, learning and sharing of knowledge.
He said that was one of the many objectives that was hoped to be achieved by organizing the 2014 Kuala Lumpur International Wushu Open Tournament.
“It is also to promote wushu as a healthy sport via its vast and unique teachings”.
“And lastly to promote creativity, composition and interactive media and themes among the practitioners of Wushu,” he added.
The tournament which was held at Chin Woo Stadium, Kuala Lumpur on the 16th and 17th of August 2014 was organised by the Wushu Federation of Malaysia together with the Henan Province Wushu Federation.
A total of 176 competitors who were mainly from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, Selangor and Henan Province in China competed in 24 events.
20 types of weapons which were featured ranging from spears, swords, broad swords, long staff, double broad swords, chains, folding fans were used by those who took part.
Spectators were captivated by the uniqueness of wushu displayed by the competitors in which three main styles of wushu namely Taijiquan, Changquan and NanquanWushu were used.
The Taijiquan which is a form of defensive martial art consists of combinations of soft and hard movements but generally dominated by slow executed moves. Practitioners of this particular art especially the elderly may notice significant health benefits.
Meanwhile Changquan, a Kung Fu style from Northern China emphasises commonly on long fist style attack and acrobatic kicks.
Followers of Wushu movies from Hong Kong and China maybe familiar with the Nanquan style which emphasises on stable low stance, power punches driven from the waist with vocal articulation or a shout. This move originated from the south Yangtze River particularly in Guangzhou.
A workshop was conducted by Masters from Henan Province for local Wushu Sifus right after the end of the Championship.
