The police have crippled two motorcycle theft gangs, known as “Sempering” and “Dokeh”, in an operation code-named “Ops Lejang Bersepadu” launched on May 1.

Perlis Criminal Investigation Department head, Supt Mohd Nashir Ya, said 12suspects, aged between 12 and 27, believed to be the gang members, was detained until last Thursday.

With their arrest, police believed they would be able to solve 33 cases of motorcycle theft reported in Arau and Kangar, he told a media conference.

Following their arrest, he said, police recovered four Honda EX5 motorcycles, three motorcycle frames and a “L” key believed used to steal the motorcycles. He said police were looking for other members of the two gangs.

Mohd Nashir said a total of 441 criminal cases had been reported between January and April this year, out of which 138 or 31.29 per cent involved motorcycle theft.

Last year, a total of 1,069 criminal cases were reported and 416 of them or38.91 per cent were for motorcycle theft, he added.
