New creative drivers needed for a vibrant industry

The animation and creative content industry future is hinged on new creative growth drivers and a more market-friendly environment that is conducive to innovation and creativity.

The animation and creative content industry future is hinged on new creative growth drivers and a more market-friendly environment that is conducive to innovation and creativity.

The CEO of Kolej Yayasan Sabah (KYS), Dr. Dg. Aminah Ali said, in creating successful animators, KYS needs to continuously learn more  of the industry’s niche areas and develop its own brand of creativity.

”Being a creative content training provider, KYS will strive to carve a niche not only within the local markets but also globally by identifying appropriate opportunities in the industry’s value chain, “said Dr. Dg. Aminah Ali during a presentation ceremony of KYS 6 students who are undergoing diploma in animation training on a collaboration programme with Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) yesterday.

The students who have completed their one-year animation training at KYS Animation Centre will proceed to their second and third year of study and training at Universiti Kuala Lumpur. Also present to witness the ceremony are the students’ parents and senior officers from KYS.

The event was held at the KYS Animation Centre in Sembulan and attended by the President of UniKL, Professor Datuk Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri and three senior members of the university management, Chairman and members of KYS Board of Directors including distinguished guests, Datuk Affendi Mohd. Hamdan from the Malaysian Comunications and Multimedia Commission and Ahmad Idham and Azahar Sulaiman, who are both renowned celebrity figures in the Malaysian film industry.

Invited speaker, Datuk Affendi reiterates that digital entrepreneurs must adopt a more focused and coordinated effort to identify their comparative advantage in the global animation industry.

“One way of moving up the value chain is to capitalize on our rich heritage and cultural diversity to create full-fledged homegrown intellectual properties, ”said Affendi.

Affendi also said, in creating full-fledged home grown intellectual properties, animators, he said need to continuously learn outside their niche areas and develop themselves into more complete content providers.

Speaking for Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Professor Datuk Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri, the President of UniKL thanked KYS for their tireless efforts in ensuring the successful implementation of UniKL animation and multimedia courses at KYS.

He said, they were impressed to see that there have been positive improvements taken by KYS and this can be seen with the completion of students who are now ready to continue their next levels of animation course at UniKL.

In the spirit of strong collaboration, we will ensure that theses trainees will be taken good care in making them the first successful cohort under the joint venture programme between UniKL and Kolej Yayasan Sabah, said Professor Datuk Dr. Abdul Hakim.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ahmad Idham, who is dubbed as Malaysian Box Office director spoke on the future prospects to the trainees undergoing animation training at UniKL.

The emphasis he said is to focus on what you can do for the creative industry rather than what the industry can do for you. He also advised the trainees to devote their heart and soul on becoming animation artists in view that the future outlook of the creative content industry in relation to the film industry is fast becoming the economic drivers of the country as one of the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) for the country to become a high-income nation.

Earlier, the UniKL group and invited guests were given a briefing tour of the KYS Digital Media Studio by the CEO of KYS, Dr. Dg. Aminah Ali.
