Police have identified a group of men who attacked a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer when he was trying to arrest them for a traffic offence in Dungun, on Monday.
Terengganu CID chief ACP K. Manoharan said police viewed the case seriously and were in the process of tracking down the suspects.
“We urge the individual to come forward and surrender themselves at the nearest police station. They are involved in attacking an enforcement officer from the government when carrying out his duty.
“It is a serious offence and we urge members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward an assist police in the investigations,” he told reporters after CUEPACS president Omar Osman’s visit to the state JPJ office.
Meanwhile, State JPJ director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said the department would closely monitor the safety and health of assistant Enforcement chief Ismail Daud, 45, who was the victim of the attack.
“The victim is still in trauma and going about his duties with assistance from other officers. I hope the incident will not affect the spirit of other officers who carry out similar duties,” he said.
He added that fortunately the officers on duty at the time of the incident were not carrying weapons because something serious could have happened. During the incident, Ismail had stopped a Proton Saga driven by one of the suspects along Jalan Jerangau-Jabor, Dungun at about 6.15pm on Monday.
When asked for his licence, the teenager had claimed that it was kept by his father and drove off with his three friends. Ismail and another officer gave chase and caught up with the suspects after10km but when Ismail was about to arrest the suspects, a Proton Persona arrived at the scene and a man, in his 40s, allegedly confronted Ismail and hit him with the help of the teenager and his friends.
His colleague could not help as he was held by one of the assailants. Ismail had said that he and his colleague managed to escape the attack and informed a policeman about the incident.
