Iftar event promotes unity across Malaysia’s diverse communities

Over 1,400 gather at Masjid Sultan Abdul Samad for an inclusive iftar, fostering unity, cross-cultural understanding, and shared Malaysian values.

The “Program Iftar Inspirasi Perpaduan Perdana 2026” showcased a powerful display of unity and inclusiveness, drawing more than 1,400 participants to Masjid Sultan Abdul Samad near KLIA. Organised by the Dakwah Division of Selangor Islamic Religious Department in collaboration with Selangor Islamic Religious Council and several community and corporate partners, the initiative underscored Selangor’s commitment to fostering social cohesion.

Participants represented a wide cross-section of society, including Muslims, new reverts, persons with disabilities, and non-Muslims, reflecting the programme’s emphasis on inclusivity. Strategic partnerships with organisations such as Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad further amplified the event’s reach and diversity.

The programme aligned with broader state-level efforts to promote understanding across Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious landscape. By creating a welcoming environment that transcended religious boundaries, organisers reinforced the notion that shared experiences can serve as a foundation for stronger community ties.

Spiritual engagement and shared experiences strengthen bonds

Activities began in the afternoon with a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony, followed by a sharing session highlighting the lived experiences of reverts and a tazkirah session to prepare attendees for the breaking of fast. These elements provided both spiritual enrichment and educational insight, particularly for non-Muslim guests seeking a deeper understanding of Islamic practices during Ramadan.

A defining feature of the event was the “Iftar Bersila” concept, where participants sat together on the floor to share their meals. This simple yet symbolic arrangement fostered a sense of humility and openness, encouraging meaningful conversations across cultural and social divides.

The programme also highlighted key objectives centred on dismantling prejudice, promoting the universal values of Islam, and facilitating cross-cultural dialogue. By offering non-Muslim attendees a firsthand experience of Ramadan traditions, organisers aimed to dispel misconceptions while nurturing mutual respect.
