Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) marked a significant milestone in community healthcare advocacy with the successful hosting of its inaugural Life Moves Festival 2025, drawing more than 2,000 participants from diverse backgrounds. Held at the hospital’s Tower C & D lobby, the festival transformed the space into an open-door health hub, offering free medical screenings, wellness consultations, interactive exhibits and health-themed family activities.
The festival’s primary objective was to empower Malaysians to take control of their health through early detection and lifestyle awareness—an urgent priority considering findings from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, which revealed that 15.6% of Malaysian adults are living with diabetes, while more than half the adult population is either overweight or obese. Cardiovascular diseases and cancer remain major causes of premature death, with most cases detected only at later stages.
“Through this event, we encourage the community to take their health seriously, without fear or judgment,” said Dr Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City.
“Sometimes, the first step is simply knowing where you stand, and early action and accountability strengthen our healthcare system and benefit the nation in the long run.”
Bringing health services to the people
In contrast to conventional clinic visits, the Life Moves Festival brought healthcare directly to the community in a warm and engaging setting. Visitors had access to free blood glucose and cholesterol checks, body composition analyses, and urine screenings—with SMC’s medical teams on-site to interpret results and offer tailored health advice.
Beyond the medical booths, the festival also featured educational zones such as the “Jantungku” Walkthrough Exhibit, a crowd-pulling interactive display that guided visitors through a multi-sensory experience of the cardiovascular system. The exhibit illustrated in vivid detail how everyday habits affect heart health, offering a compelling and visual learning experience for both children and adults.
Parents appreciated the child-friendly environment, where young ones could participate in health-themed game stations and hands-on activities, while casual shoppers explored the Vibrant Health Marketplace, showcasing nutritious foods and wellness products.
Commitment to preventive care
The Life Moves Festival is the latest in a series of initiatives by SMC aimed at shifting the nation’s healthcare paradigm from reactive treatment to proactive prevention. Its success reflects not just strong public interest, but also SMC’s broader mission to make quality healthcare more accessible and inclusive.
As Malaysia’s largest private quaternary hospital, SMC continues to set new benchmarks in care delivery. It is the first private hospital in Malaysia to receive three major hospital-wide accreditations—the Joint Commission International (JCI) from the US, Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS), and Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).
Its clinical excellence and reputation have also earned international recognition, including being named Malaysia’s top hospital and among the world’s top 250 hospitals in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals ranking for two consecutive years (2024 and 2025). SMC also clinched its fourth consecutive title as Hospital of the Year (Malaysia) at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2025.
Expanding capacity, strengthening impact
Currently operating with over 60 medical specialities across 28 Centres of Excellence, SMC houses 810 licensed beds. This capacity is set to expand further with the upcoming Tower F (Children’s Pavilion), which will allow the hospital to accommodate over 1,100 beds, further reinforcing its ability to serve the nation’s growing healthcare demands.
As Malaysia continues to battle a rising tide of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Life Moves Festival 2025 signals a critical shift in mindset—where hospitals are not just treatment centres, but champions of public wellness. The success of the festival, driven by SMC’s healthcare professionals and partners, illustrates how public engagement, awareness, and access can together drive a healthier, more informed society.
