A 10-year-old pupil from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Barathy has emerged as one of Malaysia’s brightest young sporting talents, capturing national attention with a string of remarkable achievements in junior squash.
Kavilaasri Balamurugan, born on August 11, 2015, is currently ranked number one in Malaysia and fifth across ASEAN in the girls’ under-11 category — a rare feat for an athlete of her age. Her rapid ascent through the junior ranks reflects not only exceptional skill but also a level of discipline and competitive maturity beyond her years.
Her recent victories and podium finishes underscore Malaysia’s continued strength in nurturing squash talent, a sport long associated with national excellence. Among her standout accomplishments, Kavilaasri clinched the championship title at the Milo SRAM National Junior Open 2026, further cementing her position as the country’s top junior player in her category.

On the international stage, she has demonstrated equal promise. She finished runner-up at the Oncocare Singapore Junior Open 2025 and again secured second place at the 3rd Southeast Asian Junior Championship 2025, competing against some of the region’s most promising young athletes. Her fifth-place finish at the prestigious British Junior Open 2026 — widely regarded as one of the toughest junior squash tournaments globally — further highlighted her growing competitiveness on the world stage.
Rising talent signals bright future for Malaysian squash
Kavilaasri’s early success is being closely watched by the local sporting community, as Malaysia continues its legacy of producing world-class squash players. Her achievements have not only inspired her peers but also reinforced confidence in grassroots development programmes aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent.
Observers note that her consistency across both local and international tournaments reflects a strong foundation in training and support, as well as a competitive mindset crucial for long-term success. At just 10 years old, her exposure to high-level tournaments is expected to accelerate her development and prepare her for future elite competitions.
Her performances also come at a time when Malaysia is seeking to maintain its standing in global squash, with renewed emphasis on youth development pathways. Kavilaasri’s rise offers a glimpse into the next generation of athletes who could carry the nation’s legacy forward.
State government backs emerging young athletes
The achievements of the young Kedah-born player have drawn praise from state leadership, with Kedah Chief Minister, Dato’ Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor commending her accomplishments and reaffirming support for budding athletes.
“Kedah is proud of her achievements, and we hope this will inspire more young athletes to strive for excellence at national and international levels,” he said.
State support and grassroots development remain vital as Kavilaasri’s dedication inspires young Malaysians, with growing expectations she will achieve greater success and strengthen Malaysia’s standing in international junior squash.
