There were 4,118 suicides reported from ?2001 to 2010, Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said recently.
He said that emotional pressure caused by failure in life, family problems and loss of a loved one were among the factors most often cited for the suicides.
“Other factors are psychological disturbances such as depression and trauma, involvement in crime (the suicide committed to escape punishment) and incurable?drug addiction,” he said in a written reply to Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka) at?the Dewan Rakyat.
Hishammuddin said that “critical” financial problems and heavy involvement in gambling were also causes of the suicides.
He said that several non-governmental organisations were involved in efforts to prevent suicides through counseling and mental health awareness campaigns, among other activities.
