Malaysians are fortunate they have the right to vote for their choice of government, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Yahya Hussin said today.

He said Barisan Nasional (BN) efforts to monitor and register those eligible with the Election Commission was to make the people aware of such a right.

Yahya was speaking to reporters after opening the 2011 joint meeting of Putatan Women, Youth and Puteri Umno division near here.

He was asked to comment on a statement yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who called on BN component parties to mobilise efforts to get about 1.2 million party members registered as voters.

Yahya, the state Umno liaison secretary, advised the people to be aware of their freedom to choose the party of their choice to govern the country.

He noted that some countries in the Middle East were in turmoil because the people were denied their right to vote.
