About 5,000 members of the Indian community who had no identity documents have registered themselves under the “MyDaftar” campaign held nationwide by the National Registration Department from Feb 19.
Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam, advisor to the special cabinet committee for the Indian community, said the figure might increase before the campaign ends on Saturday.
“The campaign is to ensure that they obtained their identity documents and avoid facing problems in future.
“There are still many out there waiting to register themselves. This is one of the main problems faced by the Indian community who were born here but with red identity cards,” he told reporters at the Manjung District Office in Seri Manjung where the campaign was held yesterday.
He said the MyDaftar campaign was had been approved by the government to assist the Indian community who were facing problems as they have no birth certificates and identity cards while some still possess red identity cards and have yet to apply for citizenship.
The campaign is being organised jointly by the Special Implementation Task Force of the Cabinet Committee on the Indian Community, and the National Registration Department, and supported by several other government agencies besides the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the MIC.
