Azizulhasni crashes at Brisbane World Cup

Malaysian cyclists Azizulhasni Awang, also known as The Pocket Rocketman, was involved in a high-speed crash while racing the Track World Cup meet in Brisbane, Australia.

Azizul could not avoid crashing into Japanese cyclist Tomoyuki Kawabata, who had cut into his path in the first round of the keirin event. The collision had sent him skidding at 70kmph along the track. He was rushed to hospital accompanied by his coach John Beasley.

“It’s great news for us as he has nothing broken, although he has very heavy deep bruising and a lot of missing skin. He will be fine in a week,” John Beasley said.

Azizul, who won the world championship in 2017 keirin event had just last week won the gold in the previous leg of the Track World Cup in Cambridge, New Zealand. The 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalists is targeting the gold medal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
