Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) recently awarded six pre-university students with the inaugural MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship 2022 during a ceremony held at their Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur Campus.
Marissa Haley, Mok Yen Qin, Wong Yue Qing, Tiffany Chiu Ke Sheun, Vanessa Chong Yi Wen, and Jonah Yip Mathivanan were the first batch of recipients for the MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship presented to them by Ms Angela Pok, CEO of MCKL.
Mok Yen Qin, from the ICGSE Learning Centre in Sri Damansara, scored 2A* and 6A for her IGCSE examination. Yen Qin who is now pursuing the Australian Matriculation programme at MCKL said she was surprised when contacted about receiving the award on Christmas eve.
“It was really a meaningful gift to me, as I can now help lessen my family’s financial challenges as the pandemic has affected our income for almost two years now.” Yen Qin said.
Yen Qin’s parents currently run a home baking business as their travel agency was not able to operate since the pandemic hit. Her mother, Ang Soak Pheng expressed her gratitude towards MCKL for giving her daughter this opportunity.
“This award is truly a blessing to my family as I highly doubted, she would be able to continue her studies if not for this scholarship award.” Ang said.
Another recipient of the scholarship award was Wong Yue Qing, 17, from Sri Emas International School. She achieved 5A* and 3A for her IGCSE examination and is now pursuing the Cambridge A Level programme.
“I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulder when I was selected as it is a great advantage for my family and I.” She said.
Her Father, Wong Yik Hong, who is a single parent of three and is currently operates a restaurant in Bandar Puchong Jaya was very appreciative.
“My income was severely affected by the pandemic as restaurant were not able to operate with dine-in for over a year. This generous gesture from MCKL will surely impact us positively and motivate us to keep moving forward.”
Tiffany Chiu, 18, the award recipient from AIM Christian College and now pursing her Cambridge A Level expressed her joy saying “At first I could not believe that I received the award. This has really boosted my confidence and given me a positive pressure to excel in my academics and personal development.”
Her mother, Chong Chiou Tyng said, “We have been experiencing some financial issues since my cancer relapsed in 2020. Now my husband and I are truly assured and blessed that our daughter can finish her A level in MCKL without much financial worries.”
Speaking at the event Ms Angela Pok, CEO of MCKL said “In line with the Methodist education philosophy, The MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship was established to provide deserving students access to quality education to achieve their aspirations. We are glad that this scholarship will help many students and their families in years to come as the pandemic and other economic issues has posed challenges for individuals to further their education and achieve their dream careers.”
First introduced at the end of 2021, the MCKL Excellence Award scholarship was established to provide financial aid and help families with aspiring SPM and IGCSE school leavers who excel in both academics, extra-curricular and have proven themselves as exceptional role models to gain access to quality pre-university and undergraduate programmes.
All SPM and IGCSE school leavers that fit the criteria and wish to enrol for the upcoming intake will be able to apply for the MCKL Excellence Award Scholarship 2022.
