Travel agency ordered to refund six people

The Malaysian Consumer Claims Tribunal today ordered Hijjaz Legend Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd to pay back RM24,000 to six people for cancelling an umrah package which they had paid for.

Tribunal president Datuk Abu Bakar Awang ordered the payment, of RM4,000 each, to be made before Dec 30.

Earlier during the hearing, one of the claimant, Zahri Hassan, 53, who represented the five other claimants, said the reason given by the travel agency in cancelling the umrah package was that the hotel where they were supposed to stay in Mecca collapsed.

“We don’t mind if the package is cancelled, but we are disappointed that the agency does not want to give us back the money we paid for the umrah package,” he added.

Zahri and the other claimants, who are his relatives, had paid RM4,000 each to the agency in July last year for an umrah package in March this year.

“We were informed by a representative of the agency that the umrah package was postponed to June and on March 26, the representative told us that the package was cancelled and our money will be returned last June, but we have yet to receive it,” he added.

Meanwhile, a representative from the agency requested to be given until June next year to refund the six people, but it was rejected by Abu Bakar.
