Penangites already in the mood for the Mid Autumn Festival

Penangites came together with their family to celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival at New World Park and Komtar Walk yesterday.

There were many fun activities and programmes for the entire family to participate in at the event.

The event took place after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic.

The festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese Lunar calendar with a full moon at night.

This year it falls on September 10th.

The Mid Autumn Festival is the time for the Chinese community to gather with family and friends to admire the full moon while savouring Moon Cakes and walking around with colourful Chinese lanterns.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow attended the Mid Autumn Festival and handed out lanterns and souvenirs to the public.

“It’s a joy to see families being able to gather together this year to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

“This traditional festival provides a good occasion for family bonding between the parents and children.

“Our multiracial society is unique in Malaysia. Only by maintaining a harmonious society can Malaysia move forward,” posted Chow on his Facebook.

“Love our family, society, love Penang, Malaysia! Finally, I hope you all enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival tonight and have fun,” Chow said during his speech at New World Park.

Also present were Thailand consul-general in Penang Raschada Jiwalai, MPKK Jalan Transfer/Jalan Argyll chairperson Mak Tong Lee and Toi Shan Association chairperson Ng Kwan Fook.

Chow also thanked the MPKK Jalan Transfer/Jalan Argyll and Toi Shan Association for organising the event at New World Park.

Buletin Mutiara reported that Chow proceeded to Komtar Walk after the event at the New World Park to attend another Mid Autumn festival.

Singers and a lion dance troupe entertained the crowd, followed by an entertaining Teowchew opera performance.

The Komtar Walk was reopened to the public in May this year after an RM2.1 million renovation by Penang Development Corporation. Several events have taken place there since the opening of the mall.
