Police arrested nine men in front of a restaurant located about 100 metres from where the official opening of “Little India” in Brickfields was to take place yesterday.
The nine arrested, aged in the 30’s to 40’s, were believed to be members of the Persatuan Kemajuan Pelajar Tamil Malaysia (PKPTM) who had been protesting  against Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh officiating at the event.
The group was arrested about 5pm after they refused to cooperate with the police when asked to show their identity cards. 
Before they were arrested, there was a slight commotion between them and  police but it was diffused within 10 minutes.
Those arrested were taken in a police van to the Brickfields police headquarters for investigation and were released at about 7pm after their statements were  recorded.
The PKPTM, a non-governmental organisation, had disagreed with the opening of “Little India” by Manmohan as they felt it was enough for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak or a local Indian leader to do it.
Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the arrests but declined to elaborate.
