A poultry farm in Sungai Siput, 45km north of here, was destroyed in a fire last night, causing damage estimated at RM5 million, police said today.
Sungai Siput police chief Supt Azman Salim said various chicken processing machines, a car and a motorcycle were destroyed in the 10pm blaze at the farm at Batu 3, Jalan Lintang.
He said the farm had no chickens when the fire, believed to have been caused by a short circuit, occurred as the more than 100,000 chickens were sold off to wholesalers only last week.
“No one was injured. The five Bangladeshi workers managed to escape the fire,” he said when contacted.
Azman said a fire truck with six firemen rushed to the farm and put out the fire in about two hours.
The farm operator, Ahmad Nasir Saidi, 44, who lives in Klebang Jaya here, said he was informed of the fire by villagers who lived nearby but by the time he got there, the farm of four years had gone up in smoke.
He said the chicken coops were being cleaned after the sale of the birds.
