42KL hosts Code4TheFuture to empower refugee youth

In a commendable initiative to foster digital literacy among refugee communities, 42 Kuala Lumpur (42KL) proudly hosted the second edition of Code4TheFuture. This program is specifically designed to introduce coding and ignite digital curiosity among refugee students in Malaysia. The one-day event welcomed 35 students aged 13 to 19 years from Fugee School, a dedicated learning centre for refugee communities in Kuala Lumpur.

Code4TheFuture offered a hands-on introduction to the basics of Python programming and game development using the pygame engine. This unique opportunity allowed students to delve into game design concepts, game engine mechanics, and graphics, culminating in the creation of a 2D platformer game. For these young minds, many of whom face significant challenges such as limited access to formal education and technology, this program provided an invaluable experience.

Refugee students in Malaysia encounter numerous obstacles, including language barriers and financial constraints, which often limit their access to advanced digital skills. Code4TheFuture aims to bridge this educational gap by providing an inclusive learning environment where students can develop essential digital competencies. The initiative underscores the importance of technology education in empowering youth and aligns with the mission of both 42KL and Fugee School to offer equitable learning opportunities.

Empowering Through Technology Education

Jeff Sandhu, Chief Operating Officer of 42 Malaysia, emphasized the program’s significance: “This collaboration with Fugee School is a testament to 42 Malaysia’s dedication to making tech education accessible for all, regardless of their background. Held at the 42KL campus in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the event was guided by student volunteers from 42KL. Beyond learning the technical aspects of game development, participants also developed important soft skills such as problem-solving and creative thinking. Through initiatives like Code4TheFuture, 42KL and Fugee School aim to inspire and empower the next generation of tech-savvy individuals, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
