Natalie Dau’s 720km run sets Guinness World record

Natalie Dau, 52, sets Guinness World Record for fastest crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on foot, completing 720km in 8 days, 46 minutes as part of Project 1000.

Renowned ultramarathoner Natalie Dau, a 52-year-old athlete from Singapore, has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records for achieving the “Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot.” Dau completed the grueling 720-kilometer run in 8 days and 46 minutes, starting from the northern border in Kelantan and finishing at the Johor Bahru Customs Point.

Dau took to Instagram to share her excitement and gratitude after receiving the official news of her record,: “It’s official! All the evidence has been verified and I am now a Guinness World Record holder (‘Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on Foot’). Project 1000 was never about breaking world records, it was about challenging the limits we set ourselves, and helping others. But what it did do was to keep me focused on a daily goal to push forward. Of course, this would not have happened without the dream team supporting me above and beyond.”

This remarkable feat was part of Dau’s broader Project 1000, which began on May 25, 2024, in Hat Yai, Thailand, and included running 1000 kilometers over 12 days, averaging two marathons per day. The journey culminated in Singapore on June 5, coinciding with Global Running Day. The Guinness World Records team meticulously reviewed over 100 pieces of evidence, including GPS data, photos, videos, witness statements, and receipts before confirming her achievement.

Overcoming Extreme Challenges

Dau’s record-setting journey was fraught with challenges. She battled extreme heat, physical injuries, exhaustion, hazardous road conditions, and even wild dog chases. Despite these adversities, she remained undeterred, driven by the support of local communities and her mission to inspire others.

“The first day was particularly tough as I hurt my hip,” Dau told The Straits Times. “But quitting wasn’t an option with so many people invested in my journey.” Her support team played a crucial role, with on-site coach Arthur Tong cycling alongside her, guiding her through inaccessible routes and maintaining her pacing strategy. Tong’s dedication was evident as he developed carpal tunnel syndrome from his constant cycling.

Natalie’s journey was not just a personal challenge but also a means to raise awareness and funds for GRLS, a global charity under Women Win. GRLS is dedicated to empowering underprivileged women and girls through sport and exercise, and helping them develop leadership skills. Dau’s endeavor raised over S$50,000 for the charity, aligning with her goal to “do some good through my running.”

Community Support and Personal Sacrifices

Throughout her run, Dau was buoyed by the support of friends, family, and fellow runners. “Seeing friendly faces and getting bursts of energy from them was great,” she said. Her 15-year-old daughter, Lilliana, joined her for the first and last legs of the journey, providing crucial emotional support.

Dau’s achievement extends beyond the Guinness World Record. She also received recognition from the Singapore Book of Records for the “Fastest 1000 km Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon.” Despite facing a hip injury, extreme heat that melted her running shoes, and a urinary tract infection, she remained resilient. Ensuring she regularly changed her clothes and shoes to avoid blisters and chafing was critical to her success.

Having completed the equivalent of 24 marathons in 12 days, Dau now looks forward to a period of rest and recovery. She plans to spend time with her daughter and is already eyeing her next challenge, the Sydney Marathon later in 2024.

Reflecting on her journey, Dau expressed immense gratitude for the support she received and hopes her achievement will inspire others to pursue their dreams and overcome societal expectations.
