1 Mont Kiara hosts Merdeka Day children’s storytelling contest

1 Mont Kiara (1MK) marked Malaysia’s Merdeka Day with a colorful and spirited celebration by hosting its first-ever Children’s Storytelling Contest. The event featured 56 young orators, aged 4 to 12, against a community-painted Jalur Gemilang backdrop. Their storytelling talents were on full display in this unique event.

The children captivated the audience with their renditions of beloved Malaysian tales such as Sang Kancil, Si Tanggang, Bawang Putih Bawang Merah, and Puteri Gunung Ledang. Their performances were enhanced by expressive gestures, imaginative costumes, and creative props, breathing new life into these classic stories.

A distinguished panel of judges, including Mr. Thiru, an experienced English teacher, and Ms. Malar, Principal Trainer of MicFront Hartamas, lauded the participants for their exceptional performances. The event was also commended for its educational value.

Ms. Ivy Chew, 1MK’s Assistant Centre Manager and a member of the judging panel, emphasized the contest’s goals: “Through this competition, we aimed to provide a platform for children to unleash their creativity and express themselves. By focusing on stories with strong moral values, we also hoped to foster a deeper understanding of cultural heritage.”

Winners shine brightly

Despite the high level of competition,The judges selected winners based on content, fluency, performance, professionalism, and timing. Ten-year-old Karlson Tan Thien An emerged as the champion with his powerful rendition of Si Tanggang, the Ungrateful Son. He earned RM500 in cash and prizes.

Helena Chan, aged 9, and Varun Pillai, aged 11, were named the first and second runners-up. They received cash and prizes worth RM300 and RM200, respectively. Consolation prizes of RM50 were awarded to several other participants, with all receiving certificates in recognition of their efforts.

The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on both the participants and the audience. Many parents praised 1MK for organizing such an inspiring event, noting its impact on their children’s confidence and public speaking abilities. The contest highlighted the power of storytelling in nurturing creativity and fostering cultural appreciation among the younger generation.
