Youth-led initiative raises over RM21,000 for vulnerable children

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia students raise over RM21,000 for Yayasan Chow Kit, tackling child poverty through creative fundraising

Poverty remains a persistent challenge in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur, with over 3.1 million children in Malaysia at risk of living below the poverty line, according to a 2021 UNICEF report. The lack of access to essential services, including education, healthcare, and proper housing, exacerbates these vulnerabilities.

In response, organisations like Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) have stepped up, offering a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre that supports at-risk children and teenagers with meals, therapy, case management, and educational programmes. A recent initiative by Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) students has further highlighted the role youth-driven social change can play in alleviating such disparities.

Empowering Change through Fundraising

In a remarkable display of initiative, students from HWUM’s EmPOWER Programme have raised RM21,378 to support YCK’s mission to break the cycle of poverty. Over the span of five months, the students employed a range of creative strategies, from collaborating with local businesses to hosting fundraising events. Their collective efforts not only raised substantial funds but also demonstrated the power of grassroots action in addressing pressing social issues.

One standout effort was their collaboration with Tutti Frutti, an international frozen yoghurt brand. Together, they set up a sales booth at HWUM Plaza, attracting over 300 students and raising more than RM7,000. This partnership between a local business and university students not only contributed financially but also underscored the potential of such collaborations in addressing societal challenges.

Engaging the Community

In addition to the Tutti Frutti booth, the students organised three sales stalls during a football match between students and Fugee School at TSI Stadium in Cyberjaya. Selling drinks, ice cream, and snacks, they raised over RM4,000 for YCK. A charity bazaar at HWUM Plaza further bolstered their fundraising, with items like Lime Mojito drinks and homemade cookies sold to the university community. These efforts helped increase awareness of YCK’s work while engaging students and faculty in tangible ways.

Social media played a crucial role in amplifying their efforts. Platforms like Instagram, X, Facebook, and Telegram allowed the students to reach a broader audience, connecting with family, alumni, and supporters across Malaysia and beyond. Through regular updates and fundraising calls, they not only raised awareness but also generated widespread support for their cause.

Impact Beyond Financial Contributions

While the RM21,378 raised will directly support YCK’s programmes, providing essential services and operational costs, the impact of the students’ work extends far beyond monetary donations. Dr. Lee J. Peter, Assistant Professor at HWUM, who mentored the students throughout the project, expressed immense pride in their achievements: “I am incredibly proud of what these students have achieved. Not only have they raised essential funds for YCK, but they have also emerged as champions of social justice. This initiative serves as a reminder that we all have the power to make a
difference—whether through significant efforts or small acts of kindness.”

The students’ hands-on involvement, including volunteering at YCK centres, highlighted the importance of direct engagement in creating lasting change. By distributing groceries and spending time with the children, they forged meaningful connections and developed a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by at-risk youth.

This initiative exemplifies the potential of youth-led efforts to tackle complex social issues and demonstrates that with creativity, collaboration, and dedication, change is not only possible but achievable.
