The Kuala Lumpur Art Book Fair (KLABF) is set to make a vibrant return for its fourth annual edition from 6 to 8 December 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). This year’s fair brings together over 112 local and international exhibitors from 13 countries, promising an exciting mix of independent publishers, artists, and unique art books. As a beacon for Malaysia’s art book community, KLABF has steadily evolved since its inception in 2021, becoming a dynamic hub for artistic expression and collaboration.
Driv Loo, the founder and creative director of KLABF, highlighted the fair’s international appeal:
“One thing cool about KLABF is that we have a lot of international exhibitors, and they are always excited to come and share. In Kuala Lumpur, we don’t usually get to see this kind of interaction… This kind of international exchange is what makes art book fairs special and inspiring.”
In addition to exploring unique printed works, visitors can immerse themselves in book launches, workshops, and panel discussions, making the event a holistic experience for enthusiasts and casual attendees alike.
International Exhibitors and Highlights
This year’s exhibitors represent countries including Japan, South Korea, the USA, and the UK, providing an eclectic showcase of art books, zines, and limited-edition publications. The fair’s global outlook enhances its role as a bridge for cultural exchange within Southeast Asia.
Visitors can also look forward to exclusive merchandise. KLABF has partnered with GoodPairSocks and Mossery to create limited-edition items, such as custom covers and themed memorabilia. These collaborations further extend the fair’s appeal as a space where art transcends the confines of pages, inspiring collectors to bring a piece of the event home.
Tokyo TDC Exhibition: A Landmark Collaboration
In a major highlight, KLABF 2024 partners with the Tokyo Type Directors Club (TDC) for a satellite exhibition at The Godown Arts Centre from 6 to 24 December. This marks Tokyo TDC’s debut showcase in Kuala Lumpur and Southeast Asia, presenting 84 curated works spanning typography, graphic design, branding, and experimental projects.
The exhibition also features an exclusive opening ceremony on 6 December, with a talk by Kazunari Hattori, Vice Chairman of Tokyo TDC and an acclaimed graphic designer. Tickets for the exhibition and the talk are available as standalone or bundle packages, adding a multidisciplinary dimension to the fair’s offerings.
Fostering a Thriving Art Book Culture
KLABF is more than just an art book fair—it is a celebration of community and a catalyst for connection. By uniting creators and audiences in an inclusive environment, the event nurtures a deeper appreciation for artist-run culture and self-publishing as vibrant forms of artistic expression.
With affordable entry fees and free admission for children under 12, the fair aims to reach a broad audience. “We hope visitors will bring home more than just art books and zines. KLABF is about inspiring meaningful experiences,” said Loo.
As KLABF 2024 unfolds, it solidifies its reputation as a must-visit event, not just for art book enthusiasts but for anyone eager to explore the creative potential of publishing and design.
