Pet Walk 2025: Promoting rabies awareness and healthy living

Pet Walk 2025 on April 27 at MBKS Foyer promotes rabies awareness, healthy living, and pet care with activities, contests, and charity support.

The highly anticipated Pet Walk 2025 is set to take place on April 27 at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Foyer, serving as a platform to raise awareness about rabies vaccination and animal care while encouraging a healthy lifestyle among participants.

Organised by the Kuching Progressive Community Organisation (PKPK) and the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the event aims to attract 1,000 participants, with or without pets.

A Fun and Educational Pet-Friendly Event

The 3km pet walk will commence at 6.30am, with participants embarking from the MBKS building and traversing the surrounding grounds. In line with promoting responsible pet ownership, all registered pets must have proof of anti-rabies vaccination, while their owners are required to clean up after them to maintain a tidy route. To enhance the experience, vendors selling pet treats and other displays will be available, alongside a free public health screening provided by the Kuching Division Health Office.

In an effort to ensure all pets meet vaccination requirements, SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury-Wee has proposed a dedicated ‘Vaccination Day’ to be held a month prior to the event. Additionally, the event will offer registration for SSPCA’s subsidised neutering programme, further emphasising its commitment to animal welfare.

Support for a Worthy Cause

Fifty percent of the event’s net profit will be donated to SSPCA to help cover operating costs. The organisers have extended invitations to ministries, government departments, agencies, government-linked companies (GLCs), corporate firms, and NGOs to contribute through sponsorships, whether in funds, goods, or participation. Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee will officiate as the guest of honour, accompanied by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Participants can register in four categories, each offering varying perks such as T-shirts, medals, and race bibs. Fees range from RM20 to RM55, with discounts for non-pet participants. Registration closes on March 23 and can be completed online at http://t2u.asia/e/39312.

Creative Contest to Spark Engagement

Adding a competitive flair, the organisers have introduced a ‘Top 10 Most Creative Pets and Owners’ awards. Participants must upload photos of themselves with their pets to the PKPK Facebook page, where winners will be determined by the number of likes received. This initiative is designed to foster community engagement and highlight the diverse range of pets expected at the event.

With 200 registrations already secured, including 100 pet owners, organisers are optimistic about achieving their 1,000-participant target. This year’s event will welcome not only cats and dogs but also birds and other pets, showcasing the broad appeal of the Pet Walk.
