When disaster strikes, Ihsan Johor stands ready. This Johor-based NGO has become a beacon of hope for flood victims across Malaysia, from Johor to Kelantan and now Sarawak.
Their relentless efforts, supported by a network of collaborators and volunteers, highlight the power of community in times of crisis.
A lifeline for flood victims
At the height of the Johor floods in January 2025, Ihsan Johor sprang into action, providing essential aid to 4,000 evacuees across 38 Temporary Shelters (PPS).
Working under the national disaster relief agency NADMA’s ‘Friends of NADMA’ programme, they coordinated the distribution of RM150,000 worth of supplies, including mattresses, food, water, and infant care products.
“We channel and manage contributions from various NGOs to ensure aid reaches those in need,” said Farrah Baptist, CEO of Ihsan Johor.
Collaborators like Yayasan Kebajikan Suria, Yayasan Hasanah, and Volunteer 1Malaysia played a crucial role in these efforts.
The logistics were gruelling. Volunteers travelled up to 190 km daily, often returning to their headquarters in Johor Bahru at 4 am.
“The intensity was overwhelming, but the teamwork made it possible,” Farrah added.
Beyond floods: A year-round mission
While flood relief remains a core focus, Ihsan Johor continues to serve the community year-round.
During disaster-free periods, they distribute meals and fresh produce in Johor Bahru, partnering with Yayasan Suria Johor Bahru through initiatives like the Lost Food Project and Farmbyte.
Their commitment extends beyond immediate relief. Ihsan Johor also focuses on preparedness, conducting briefings and trial runs to ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures.
This proactive approach has made them a trusted partner in disaster management since joining NADMA’s ‘Rakan’ programme in 2022.
Ihsan Johor’s work is a testament to the impact of collective effort. Whether through donations, volunteering, or partnerships, everyone can contribute to their mission.
As Farrah aptly put it, “We can never do what we do without the help of our collaborators and volunteers.”
Both Ihsan Johor and Yayasan Kebajikan Suria Kawasan Permas Johor Bahru (Yayasan Suria JB) are listed as beneficiaries in Sokong.org.
