Malaysia shone on the regional stage at the LEGOLAND® School Challenge 2025, with two local schools emerging as champions in Asia’s largest interschool LEGO® building competition. Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the annual contest brought together nearly 2,000 students from seven countries, celebrating creativity, teamwork, and innovation.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, claimed the Primary Champion title with their team LEGEND INSPIRE, while Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gopeng, Perak, triumphed in the Secondary Category with their team Lucira. In the inaugural Junior division, Singapore’s Queenstown Primary School, represented by Treetop Builders, secured the top prize.
Malaysian teams rise to the challenge
The young builders of LEGEND INSPIRE from Sekolah Kebangsaan Port Dickson spent over a month perfecting their Switzerland-inspired design. Despite their ages – between 10 and 12 – the four members displayed extraordinary commitment, often staying back after school to fine-tune their project. Their toughest hurdle was replicating a cascading waterfall, which demanded precise piece selection and steady hands.
“The Speed Build challenge was very tough, but because each of us had clear roles, we managed to finish on time,” the team shared. For the students, the win was made even sweeter by the promise of their first international trip — an exclusive visit to Korea.
Equally inspiring was the journey of Secondary champions Lucira, made up of four 16-year-old students from Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gopeng. The team poured two months of effort into their build, motivated by lessons from their unsuccessful attempt last year. “As boarding school students, balancing the project with our academic commitments was our biggest challenge. Of course, there were arguments along the way, but this taught us communication and problem-solving skills,” they explained. “We’ve been fans of LEGO since childhood, so winning this year – especially against experienced teams – feels completely unexpected. We’re beyond thrilled to be heading to Korea.”
A regional platform for creativity
Now in its fourth edition, the LEGOLAND® School Challenge has evolved into a truly regional event. Under the theme “Build Your Dream Destination”, this year’s competition attracted participants from Malaysia, India, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, and China.
Among the new milestones were a Live Speed Build Finale, which tested quick thinking and agility under pressure, and the expansion of categories to include Junior teams aged 7–9. Singapore and China also made their debut appearances in the finals, while the Philippines returned after a two-year hiatus.
Showcasing everything from futuristic Mars theme parks to eco-friendly island retreats, the finalists demonstrated how imagination, cultural storytelling, and technical skill could be combined in striking ways.
“We are thrilled to see the LEGOLAND School Challenge evolve into a truly regional platform,” said Cs Lim, Vice President of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. “This expansion underscores LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s commitment to positioning Johor as the home of a competition that unites young builders across Asia, where creativity, collaboration, and innovation meet.”
Recognition and prizes
The Challenge distributed prizes worth over RM200,000, including LEGO® trophies, annual passes, exclusive sets, and overseas trips. Malaysia’s champions will travel to Korea, while Junior winners will enjoy an exclusive adventure at LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort.
The winning creations will be showcased at MINILAND in LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort until December 2025, giving the public an opportunity to marvel at Asia’s next generation of builders.
Beyond the competition, the event reinforced LEGO’s philosophy of “learning through play”, offering students a platform to explore STEAM concepts and cultivate skills in creativity, teamwork, and resilience.
For Malaysian parents and educators, the double victory is more than just a triumph — it is a reminder of the nation’s growing strength in nurturing innovation among its youth.
