More than 500 fans packed the Malaysia Airlines Pavilion at MATTA Fair on Friday. They came to meet three Manchester United legends: Park Ji-sung, Wes Brown and Edwin van der Sar. The turnout stretched well beyond the usual travel-fair crowd.
Supporters travelled from across Malaysia and from overseas to be there. That reach says something about the pull a football club can still hold, decades after these players’ careers peaked. Few travel-fair booths draw a queue like this one did.
This did not happen by accident. Malaysia Airlines’ parent company, Malaysia Aviation Group, has run a three-year partnership with Manchester United since 2023. Friday’s turnout was that partnership doing exactly what it was built to do.
MAS Pavilion becomes the fair’s biggest draw

The Malaysia Airlines Pavilion has been one of MATTA Fair’s biggest attractions this year. It features cabin displays, travel-technology showcases and fare promotions, giving visitors more to do than browse brochures.
Organisers flagged sports content as a headline attraction before the fair even opened. They named Manchester United legends among the planned acts. Johor Darul Ta’zim players and national footballers rounded out the sports line-up.
Friday’s crowd suggests that plan is working. A quiet travel-fair booth does not usually draw 500 people wanting photos with retired footballers, and this one did exactly that.
There is more to come. A surprise performance is scheduled for Saturday, 6 September, with details to be announced through MATTA’s social channels. Organisers appear to be pacing marquee moments to keep footfall high across all three days of the fair.
MAG’s three-year bet on Manchester United

MAG’s tie-up with Manchester United is not a one-off booking. It has run since 2023 and was built for moments exactly like this one.
Bryan Foong, MAG’s CEO of Airline Business, said the crowd size reflected United’s huge and loyal fan base. He noted that base spreads across the exact markets MAS flies to.
He pointed to Australia, Southeast Asia, India and the UK as key overlaps between United’s global following and MAS’s route network. That alignment is the point of the partnership, not a side effect of it.
For MAG, the tie-up functions as a standing brand-visibility tool. It gets timed to high-traffic moments like MATTA Fair, where travel intent and fandom already sit in the same room.
Readers heading to MITEC this weekend should watch MATTA’s social channels for Saturday’s surprise act. Given how Friday played out, it looks built to draw another crowd.
