What happened at Section 9.90

The landslide happened late at night, at 11pm on Thursday 5 November. JKR said heavy rain soaked the slope and raised the water pressure in the soil.

As a result, the slope became unstable and the soil moved. Both the upslope and the downslope failed.

However, the department says the actual cause is still being studied. Detailed investigations and technical assessments are under way. The reports do not name a village or give a kilometre marker for the site.

Heavy rain has also hit other parts of the Klang Valley recently. For example, MetMalaysia issued a flash flood warning for the region. Meanwhile, about 200 families were affected when flash floods entered homes in Saujana Utama.

What JKR is doing

Gombak district JKR has closed the road to all traffic, and JKR Selangor confirmed the full closure. It has activated its Traffic Management Plan, with full-closure and diversion signs in place.

Meanwhile, workers have placed a temporary tarpaulin over the embankment and the affected slope surfaces. In addition, the state road concessionaire is clearing soil and fallen trees from the upslope area.

JKR is also monitoring movement in the road structure and the stability of the slope. Moreover, it plans a temporary diversion for light vehicles, subject to technical considerations.

There is no reopening date yet. JKR said it will announce the reopening once technical assessments confirm that the road is safe for traffic. A light-vehicle diversion must also be in place first.

What drivers should do

So drivers who normally use the road should plan another route. JKR posted alternative route details on the Facebook pages of JKR Selangor and JKR Gombak on Friday morning. The reports do not name the routes.

Drivers travelling between Rawang and Kuala Selangor are the most affected. Therefore, check those pages before you leave. In addition, allow extra time, since traffic may shift to nearby roads.

Please follow the closure and diversion signs that JKR has put up. The planned diversion is for light vehicles only, so lorry drivers may need to find other routes.

However, several details are still unknown. The reports do not say how long the closed section is. They also do not say when the temporary diversion will be ready. Likewise, JKR has not said how many vehicles use the road each day.

In short, the Rawang-Kuala Selangor road stays closed until JKR clears it. Drivers should watch for updates, avoid slopes during heavy rain and follow the diversion signs. As a result, a short delay now is safer than a risky shortcut.
