IRB: Info in BR1M application not for collecting tax

IRB yesterday reiterated that the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) was a sincere effort by the government to help low income earners and not for income tax purposes.

 

The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) yesterday reiterated that the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) was a sincere effort by the government to help low income earners and not for income tax purposes.

IRB Public Relations Officer Masrun Maslim in a statement said all information of applicants would be recorded in a system for the verifying information on the recipients of the RM500 assistance under the BR1M programme.

Commenting on a report by the Klang Consumer Association in a local daily, Masrun denied that IRB would use information gathered for the BR1M would be used for taxation purposes as claimed by an applicant.

“Activities to collect outstanding income tax is an ongoing process and has nothing to do with the BR1M. Information provided by applicants will only be used for giving out assistance to the eligible candidate.

“The notice received by the complainant was the normal notice for collection of outstanding income tax which is send to all as a normal procedure,” he said in the statement.

He added that the IRB would not be able to verify information without proper details of the applicant.
