Student Hazman Shahir Samsul Kamar, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, proves that the disease is not a hindrance for one to excel in examinations .

Despite not being able to walk and having to rely on breathing aid, this student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Dol Said in Alor Gajah scored 5As out of nine subjects he sat for this year’s Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination.

Hazman Shahir weighs only 12kg and moves around in a wheel chair.

“It was unexpected because I only managed to get 3As in the trial examination. Most unbelievable is for Mathematics, which I got E during the trial examination,” he said when met after receiving the Melaka Education Department’s special award for his achievement today.

Hazman Shahir, 15, who is the eldest of four siblings, attributed his success to at least three hours of study everyday, besides not missing the five times a day prayers and reading the Quran.

“As the eldest in the family, I want to be a good example for my siblings and will work hard to achieve my ambition to be a graphic designer,” he added.

Hazman Shahir also did well in his Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) in 2008 by scoring 4As and 1B.
