Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha has announced that effective Monday, November 21, the public can start renewing their driving licences based on their birth dates.
“The initiative is an easy reminder for people to renew their licences, as the expiry date will be on their birthday and would also reduce the number of inactive licence holders,” he said.
Current Road Transport Department records show 2.2 million out of 11.8 million drivers holding inactive licences.
Depending on the length of the renewal term between the expiry date and the individual’s birthday, the government will absorb a certain portion of the fee involved, he added.
Updating on another development, Kong said documentation for the Automated Enforcement System (AES) will be ready by the end of this year.
“More than 800 accident prone spots have been identified for the installation of the system, in phases starting middle of next year onwards, to detect traffic offences,” he said.
The AES which involves the installation of cameras at high risk accident zones and traffic lights to capture traffic offences, is widely used in developed countries.
