Muhyiddin: UUCA could be amended if students ready

UUCA could be amended or abolished if students could focus on their studies without being hoodwinked
by any quarters, said Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) could be amended or
abolished if students could focus on their studies without being hoodwinked
by any quarters, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Let me pose a question? Are you ready? If so, why not. Maybe the
government no longer need the Act (UUCA) or we could amend it to provide
space so that students could make decisions without being hoodwinked by any
legislative power.

“This is because you (students) have said that you know what to do and the
government does not have to worry as you will devote your time to studies,”
he said when responding to a question at the National Integrity Convention
in Putrajaya today.

He questioned whether the students were ready and mature enough to make
wise decisions without being influenced by others as they said they do not
need anyone to safeguard them and they would not do something unbeneficial
to them.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, however said what was worrying
was that student involvement in politics would make them unable to
concentrate on their studies.

“This is a cause for concern as the campus will eventually be turned into a
political arena that will be detrimental to efforts to produce
knowledgeable human,” he said.
