The 10-year National Agro Food Policy, starting from this year until 2020, was approved by the Cabinet last Wednesday.
Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Noh Omar said, among others, the policy which replaced the National Agriculture Policy, would focus on safeguarding national food supply.
The policy was also aimed at boosting the income of farmers and farming entreprenuers in line with the government plan to make Malaysia a high income nation by 2020, he told reporters at Parliament’s lobby today.
He said the policy would also be used as a guide by the private sector in turning the agro food industry into a competitive and sustainable industry.
He said the agro food industry was projected to expand at the rate of 4.7 per cent a year by 2020 with the turnover reaching RM29.8 billion.
