The government will not scrap the Sunway bound toll on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) as the revenue collected is used to fund development projects throughout the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Works Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor said the government had abolished the Kuala Lumpur bound toll on the NPE on Feb 14 while the toll for motorists heading for Sunway was reduced from RM1.60 to RM1 on Feb 17.
“This is a progressive step in line with the ‘people first performance now’ slogan to ease the burden of the people,” he said when responding to a question from Hee Loy Sian (PKR-Petaling Jaya South).
To a supplementary question from Hee why the government could not do away with the toll on the NPE as demanded by Taman Medan and Taman Dato’ Harun residents, Shaziman said it entailed a huge cost to the government.
He said the government was committed in easing the burden faced by users of other expressways by building alternative routes and guarantees the toll rates on the North-South Expressway and the MTD would not be raised for the time being.
