Wanted: “Intelligent and charismatic” senators

The Dewan Negara presidents wants to change the perception that the senate are merely a rubber-stamp by initiating reforms.

The Dewan Negara is set to reform its public image into a credible, democratic and effective body in the system of checks and balances, said its president, Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.

He said the reform was aimed at correcting the misconception that the senate was merely a rubber-stamp.

“I am making several changes and proposals to correct the perception that the Senate is a rubber-stamp. It is merely a perception. For us, if we think a bill is likely to cause a lot of problems the people,we (members of the Senate) will not endorse it,” he said at a dialogue with participants of the 1Malaysia Young Journalist Fellowship at the Parliament here today.

Abu Zahar said the Dewan Negara would carry out a campaign, including forums to raise public awareness on its role.

He also hoped members of the Senate would be made up of knowledgeable, competent, capable, intelligent and charismatic individuals.
