Southern College, the Chinese community’s first Institution of higher education established in 1990, received an offer letter from Muhammad Khaled Nordin, Minister of Higher Education to upgrade its status to University College.

A welcoming ceremony with more than 1000 people, comprising mainly of Chinese community leaders, attended the gathering held at the main hall of Southern College.

This upgrade has been highly anticipated as it has been the goal of the college since its 20th year anniversary, back in 2010.

Khaled Nordin said  he was impressed by the determination of the college director in organising different fund raising activities for the past 20 years to build the academic and teaching buildings, student hostel, multiple-usage convention hall and the 6 storey Traditional Chinese Medicine Faculty Building.

Southern college, had been applying for the University College status for the past 3 years and had to fight very hard to convince the Ministry of Higher Education to earn the status. After improving the facilities, recruiting qualified lecturers, producing academic journals, engaging in international research and conventions help build the reputation of the College.

By having International twinning programs and recruiting students from China and Indonesian they manage to show contributions made to the nation’s economic development.

The college had also established Jabatan Pengajian Melayu and worked closely with Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, to demonstrate the spirit of a 1Malaysia University College, Which is not an exclusively tradition chinese college. Foreign professor had been brought in from Europe, US, Taiwan and China to upgrade the quality of its academy program.

Southern University College in the long term, plans to achieve a University status in 2020 and aims to be an internationally recognised University by 2030. The college will improve its academic program from time to time and is earning the support of the Chinese community nationwide.
