This time of the year brings Father’s Day, a time to pay respect to the one who helped bring us into this world.
Father’s Day is a celebration of fathers inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting.
Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Arkansas from Spokane who was also the driving force behind its establishment.
Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washingtonon June 19, 1910.
Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them.
Father’s Day is actively celebrated in Malaysia with the time-honoured tradition of bringing their dads to restaurants for a special meal. Not to be left out, hotels and shopping malls chipped in having special menus catering for a family gathering and with that irresistible offers of shopping of gifts for dad.
Here is Happy Father’s Day to all the caring, caregiving working dads who juggle work and family every day.
